Bellows was born in Blair, Nebraska to a family where painting, literature, music and theater were part of life. He was trained in drawing and painting by his father. Though he was educated at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, he considers his parents among the most important influences. Bellows had his first solo exhibitions in Omaha in 1970 and 1971, but his reputation grew after showing with Tatistcheff Gallery, NY, in 1985, first in group shows, then in solo exhibitions in 1988 and 1993. He was included in the "Collectors Show" at the Arkansas Arts Center in 1986. Other prominent venues followed including: Florida International University, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, the National Academy of Design and Forum Gallery. In 1994, he was included again in a group exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center.
