Thomas Burt Allen was an American painter and illustrator known for a moody and expressionist style that pushed the boundaries of commercial art in the 1950s and 60s. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was educated at Vanderbilt University, and later at the Art Institute of Chicago. (wikipedia, 2020)

In 1983 he was named Hallmark Professor at the University of Kansas, and he was later chair of the illustration department at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, where he taught until his death.
