Margaretta K. Mitchell is a writer, teacher, and photographer, the author of 'Gift of Place' (1969) and coauthor with Dorothea Lange of 'To a Cabin' (1973). She has written many illustrated articles for 'Popular Photography' magazine and is curator of the exhibition 'Recollections: Ten Women of Photography' at the ICP. The show will be circulated during 1980 to museums throughout the United States by the International Exhibitions Foundation. From Margaretta K. Mitchell, 'Recollection. Margaretta K. Mitchell was born on May 27, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, United States.

In 1957 Margaretta graduated from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, United States. Also, she studied at the Boston Museum School in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, from 1958 to 1959. Margaretta attended Escuela de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain from 1959 to 1960.

From 1957 to 1959 Margaretta worked as a research assistant to Dr. Edwin Land. In 1973 she worked as a teacher at Head-Royce Schools in Oakland, California, United States. She held this position until 1976. Also, in 1973 she was an assistant at Ansel Adams Yosemite Workshop.

From 1974 to 1978 Margaretta taught private workshops and seminars. In 1975 Mitchell served on the staff of the Photography Workshop in Volcano, Hawaii. She taught photography at the University of California Extension in San Francisco and Berkeley, United States from 1976 to 1978.

In 1978 Mitchell created the slide, film presentation, Dance for Life for the San Francisco Art Commission at the San Francisco Museum of Modem Art. In two years she teached photography for the Civic Arts Program in Walnut Creek, California, United States and for City College of San Francisco.
