Linda Arbuckle
Linda Arbuckle is one of the outstanding workers specializing in the maiolica technique. She studied zoology at the University of Miami, Oxford, OH, but received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art (1981) and MFA Rhode Island School of Design (1983). Since 1992 she has been teaching at the University of Florida, School of Art and Art History where she now is Associate Professor in ceramics. She studied with William Brouillard at Cleveland. In her artist statement, she says: "My interest is functional pottery, and I enjoy appealing first through the senses in a domestic setting. There are many ways to think about orchestrating relationships between form and surface. Majolica is a challenging vehicle that allows the use of an extended choice of palette and the possibility of active brushwork to investigate surface on form. The botanical motifs are not meant to imitate nature, but to evoke it while providing a vehicle to use marks and color in certain rhythms, directions, and arrangements that give meaning and shape to the surface of the specific form.Tableware by nature tends to be positive in attitude. I want the work to have strong forms and cheerful, spontaneous surfaces that are direct but engage the view over repeated readings.(http://lindaarbuckle.com/arbuckle_resume06.htm 4-30-08)lives in Micanopy, FloridaEducation 19831981 1968-75 MFA Ceramics Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI.
