Josef Achmann
Josef Achmann grew up in Regensburg as the son of a master mayor . In 1906 he began his artistic education in Munich atthe West Rieder Art School with Hans Fleischmann ; For the summer semester of 1907 he moved to the Academy of FineArts . In 1908-11 he had his own studio in Regensburg (in the so-called Runtingerhaus , a medieval patrician castle), in1912-14 he stayed for studies in Paris . 1917 followed in Munich a joint exhibition with George Grosz , Max Pechstein andErich Heckel .From 1919 to 1921 Achmann, together with the poet Georg Britting, published the expressionist journal Die Sichel . Atribute to this collaboration is the oil painting The Brennsuppenesser (1919), with a sickle in the background. [1]After 1935, Achmann was banned from exhibiting; his paintings were removed from public galleries. From 1940 until hisdeath he lived in Schliersee.Achmann was married to actress Magda Lena (eigtl Magdalena von Perfall , 1883-1940, daughter of Anton von Perfall ).She was engaged at the Munich Residenztheater and directed a private drama school; her students included Hans Baurand Peter Pasetti .Currently, a dissertation (including a catalog raisonné) on the graphic works of Achmann at the Kunsthistorisches Institutder Universität Regensburg is being prepared.
